Our story
Built by neighbors, for neighbors.
Harvest Table started in 2009 with a borrowed van and a simple idea: good food that would otherwise go to waste should reach the people who need it. We’ve grown a lot since — the idea hasn’t changed.
From a borrowed van to a county-wide table
In our first year, a handful of volunteers collected day-old bread and bruised produce and drove it to a single church pantry. Word spread. Grocers offered their surplus. Farmers donated what didn’t make it to market. Families showed up to sort, pack, and drive.
Today Harvest Table supports a network of partner pantries, a roving produce market, weekend meals for students, and grocery boxes for seniors — all built on the same belief that nobody in San Diego should have to go without a meal.
How it works
From surplus to supper, in four steps
A food bank is the engine behind the pantries you see in your neighborhood. Here’s the path a can of beans takes to reach a family’s kitchen.
-
Step 1
Source
We rescue surplus from grocers, farms, and food drives, and buy staples in bulk to fill the gaps.
-
Step 2
Warehouse
Food is inspected, sorted, and stored safely in our central warehouse — kept cold or dry as needed.
-
Step 3
Partner pantries
Trucks deliver to dozens of neighborhood pantries, markets, and school programs across the county.
-
Step 4
Neighbors
Families pick up free groceries close to home — with dignity, and without red tape.
What guides us
Our values
Dignity first
We serve neighbors, never “cases.” Choice, warmth, and respect come standard.
Waste not
Good food belongs on plates, not in landfills. We rescue what others would throw away.
Close to home
Help should be a short trip away — we meet people in the neighborhoods where they live.
Open to all
No proof of income, no immigration questions, no judgment. If you’re hungry, you’re welcome.
